Jee Kim, Permanent Makeup Artist
Microblading can give you beautiful, natural-looking brows — but sometimes the healed results appear too light or even grey. If this has happened to you, there are several common reasons why your microbladed brows may not heal as you expected.

Microbladed brows heal too light |
Common Reasons Why Microblading Heals Too Light
-
Pigment Choice Too Light
Your artist may have selected a pigment shade that was too light for your skin tone. Always discuss your desired healed color — pigments heal about 30% to 40% lighter than when freshly done.
-
Microblading Needles Too Thin (Nano Blading)
Using ultra-fine needles can create delicate strokes, but they may not implant enough pigment into the skin. Thicker needles can sometimes improve pigment saturation and longevity. For more visible strokes, consider permanent makeup with SofTap.
-
The Skin Is Too Thin or Mature
Thin or mature skin doesn’t hold pigment as well. Younger, thicker skin tends to retain pigment more easily. Older clients may experience lighter healing results or uneven color retention.
-
Microblading Depth Too Shallow
If the artist didn’t go deep enough into the upper dermal layer, the pigment may fade quickly as the skin exfoliates. This can result in brows that heal much lighter than intended.

Why Microblading Can Heal Grey
-
Cool vs. Warm Toned Pigments
Not all browns are the same. Brown pigments have cool or warm undertones. When using cooler pigment, they will heal greyish or ashy. Artists will select pigment based on your skin undertone and make the right choice of selecting cool or warm pigment. Below are examples of Cool Browns and Warm Browns. Cool Browns have an ashy/grey undertone while Warm Browns have a Red or Yellow undertone.
We tend to fall into the following category of skin undertone: olive/yellow, pink/red, or both olive and pink (peaches and cream). Depending on your skin undertone, pink/red skin tone should stick to warmer brown pigments, while olive/yellow skin tone should explore cooler browns.
-
Microblading Incisions Too Deep
If the artist tend to be heavy handed and the hair-like strokes are made too deep, pigment can heal ashy or grey-blue due to being trapped under the skin’s surface where color shifts occur.
Better Options for Mature Skin (40+)
If you’re over 40, consider the SofTap® method — a gentle, manual technique that uses fewer hairstrokes to mimic natural hair texture. It’s less invasive, ideal for thinner skin, and heals softer and more natural-looking.
Pro Tip: If your microbladed brows are too cool or warm, have the permanent makeup artist complete another touch up session to correct the color. If the microbladed brows are too light, try exploring a different modality such as SofTap for your permanent makeup needs.
Final Thoughts
Light or grey microbladed brows are common, but fixable. Working with an experienced permanent makeup artist who understands skin types, client's undertone, pigment undertone, and technique depth makes all the difference in achieving beautiful, lasting results.
