Brow size matters

Eyebrows are a bit like fashion trends: dramatic, unpredictable, and occasionally questionable in hindsight. If brows could talk, they’d probably say, “We’ve been through a lot.”

Permanent Makeup Brows: Before/After

Let’s take a quick stroll through brow history:

In the 1950s, women were committed. Brows were shaved off and redrawn as skinny, upside-down “U” shapes—like two very surprised commas living on your forehead. Then came the 1970s, when Brooke Shields showed up and said, “What if we just… didn’t touch them?” Suddenly, bold, bushy, almost-unibrows were the moment.

In the 80s and 90s, high arches created drama and Pazzaz!!!

2000s, South Korean Kpop stars brought in the flat with no arch brows.

Fast forward to the 2010s, and the Kardashian family gave us full, structured, almost geometric brows—sharp, defined, and bold enough to have their own zip code.

So now you might be wondering:
High arch? Low arch? Straight across? Soft curve? What actually looks good on me?

Here’s the truth (and it’s less dramatic than TikTok would have you believe):
It’s all about proportion.

Brows: Supporting Actors, Not the Star

As a permanent makeup artist, here’s the golden rule:
Your eyes are the main character. Your brows are the set design.

They should frame, enhance, and support—not steal the spotlight like an over enthusiastic extra.

When brows are too bold, too dark, or too trendy, they start competing with your natural features. And unless your goal is “my eyebrows enter the room before I do,” that’s not ideal.

Why Trends Are Fun… Until They’re Tattooed

Trends are great—for things you can wash off.

Go wild with:

  • Brow gels
  • Pencils
  • Pomades
  • That one experimental phase where you try laminated brows that point toward the ceiling

Have fun! Express yourself! Take photos!

But when it comes to permanent makeup or microblading, this is where we gently step away from trends and toward timeless design.

Because what’s “in” today might be tomorrow’s “what was I thinking?”

The Secret Sauce: Proportion

Forget trends. Forget what your favorite influencer is doing.
Your best brow shape is based on your face—not theirs.

Here’s how to think about it:

Larger Features = Stronger Brows

If you have:

  • Larger eyes
  • A more prominent nose
  • A broader face

Then slightly fuller, more substantial brows will balance everything out beautifully.

If you go too thin here, it can create a “something’s missing” effect—or even make the face look older.

Smaller Features = Softer Brows

If you have:

  • Smaller eyes
  • A petite nose
  • Delicate facial features

Then oversized, heavy brows can overwhelm your face.

It’s like putting theater curtains on a studio apartment window—technically impressive, but… a bit much.

Shape Matters, But Balance Matters More

Yes, there are different brow shapes:

  • High arch (dramatic, lifted)
  • Low arch (soft, natural)
  • Straight brows (modern, youthful)

But none of these are universally “best.”
They’re tools—not rules.

The real goal is harmony. Everything should feel like it belongs together, like a well-cast movie where no one is wildly miscast as the wrong character.

The Permanent Makeup Philosophy

When designing brows for permanent makeup, think:

  • Classic over trendy
  • Balanced over bold-for-the-sake-of-bold
  • Enhancing over overpowering

A well-designed brow should still look good:

  • In 5 years
  • In 10 years
  • In photos you didn’t know were being taken

Final Thought: Brows Shouldn’t Be the Plot Twist

Great brows don’t make people say, “Wow, amazing eyebrows!”
They make people say, “Wow, you have beautiful eyes”—without quite knowing why.

So go ahead—experiment with trends using makeup. Have fun with it. Be bold on a Tuesday if you feel like it.

But when it comes to anything long-term?
Keep it classic, keep it proportional, and let your eyes stay the star of the show.
