Does Permanent Makeup and Microblading last forever or does it fade

Permanent Makeup for the eyebrows is both permanent and not permanent at the same time. Microblading and nano blading are also forms of Permanent Makeup (PMU). In this discussion, we are only discussing Permanent Makeup for the eyebrows, not eyeliner PMU. Eyeliner is different because most artists use black pigment, while brow pigments are usually different shades of brown.

Refreshed application of PMU

The answer is both yes and no because Permanent Makeup pigment contains small traces of iron oxide. When a brown pigment is implanted into the skin, the iron oxide particles remain in the skin permanently. Your body does not fully absorb or remove iron oxide, which is why the term “Permanent Makeup” is used.

However, even though the particles stay in the skin, the brown color or hue of the pigment can fade over time. Some brows become lighter and thinner, while others may eventually fade so much that they are almost invisible to the naked eye. The average fading process for soft and natural-looking brows is about 12 to 15 months. This is especially true for subtle applications such as hairstroke brows created with SofTap, microblading, nano blading or the rotor machine.

Ombre brows are different because they involve a heavier layering of pigment by using a Rotor Machine. A Rotor Machine is similar to a body tattoo gun, but has a gentler thrust for the skin on your face.  This technique creates a fuller and more saturated makeup appearance and usually lasts longer than the natural hairstroke brows.

As the brown pigment fades, the color can also change. Warm brown pigments may fade into pink or peach tones, while cooler browns may fade into grayish shades. That is why it is very important to choose a Permanent Makeup artist who understands skin undertones and how different browns heal and fade over time.

The good news is that even if the brows fade into unwanted colors, they can usually be corrected. A skilled PMU artist can refresh, modify, or neutralize the color to restore the brows back to a natural brown shade.
