What men should expect on their first Permanent Makeup Microblading appointment.
If you’re going for your first appointment with a permanent makeup artist for men's eyebrows (often called microblading, nano brows, or powder brows), here’s what to expect and how to prepare:
Before the Appointment
-
Check their portfolio (Instagram, website, Facebook etc.) to ensure they have experience with male clients—men’s brows are typically shaped differently than women's brows (fuller, wider and flatter than women's).
Avoid Before Appointment:
-
No alcohol, caffeine, or blood thinners (like aspirin, ibuprofen) for 24 hours before the procedure—it can cause bleeding and affect pigment retention.
-
No tanning, sunburn, or intense skincare treatments (like chemical peels, retinol, or exfoliants) for at least 2 week.
-
Avoid tweezing, waxing, or shaving brows for a few days so the artist can see your natural growth pattern.
Prepare Mentally:
-
Discuss your goals: Natural enhancement, filling gaps, or reshaping. Most men prefer a subtle, natural look.
-
Bring reference photos if you have a preference (including your own photos with brows how you like them filled or groomed).
✅ During the Appointment
Consultation:
-
The artist will design the brow shape using a topical brow pencil, and get your approval before starting.
-
You’ll discuss pigment color that matches skin tone for a natural result.
For clients with grey hair, select pigment color that matches your hair color when you were in your 30s We do not want grey brows.
Consent form will need to be completed prior to the procedure.
Numbing:
-
A numbing cream will be applied before and during the procedure to minimize discomfort.
You will feel a slight tingling sensation.
All numbing cream, gel or liquid are topically applied. There are no injections of any kind.
Procedure:
-
Depending on the Permanent Makeup technique (microblading = hair-like strokes, nano brows = machine strokes, powder brows = soft shading, or a combo), the process takes about 30 minutes per brow. Estimate 60 minutes for both brows.
Pain Level:
-
No to mild discomfort—many compare it to light scratching or plucking of brow hair.
It is recommended not to take ibuprofen or any pain medications before the procedure.
✅ After the Appointment:
Healing Process:
-
Brows will look darker for the first few days and lighten as they heal (about 30 to 50% lighter).
Typical heal time is 14 days. Some heal faster than others, but the average is 2 weeks.
Slight swelling of tattooed area is normal for the first few days.
-
Minor scabbing or flaking is normal.
All activities such as work, moderate exercise, showering, socializing, etc... is OK.
Avoid excessive sun exposure, swimming, facials, or dusty activities for 14 days after the procedure. Wear a baseball cap or sunglasses if you need to be outdoors for a length of time during heal time.
Aftercare:
-
No touching the brows with your hands for 7–10 days.
-
Apply healing ointment with QTip as directed.
-
Follow the artist's detailed aftercare instructions strictly for best results.
Touch-Up:
-
A follow-up appointment 4 to 6 weeks later is standard to perfect the shape and color.
✅ Results:
-
Expect a natural, well-groomed look that enhances your features but doesn’t look overly done.
-
Results typically last 1–2 years depending on skin type, lifestyle, and technique used.
